Don’t Take Chances: 4 Problems You Face When You Let Your SR22 Insurance Lapse

If you're required to have SR22 documentation on your insurance, don't let the coverage lapse. You might think it's an inconvenience to have. But, it's more of an inconvenience to lose it. In fact, if you let your SR22 coverage lapse, you could run into some serious problems. Here are just four of the problems you can face if your SR22 insurance lapses.

Start the Process All Over Again

If you've been ordered to maintain SR22 documentation on your auto insurance, you have a specified time limit for that coverage. In most states, there's a three-year requirement. If you live in Alaska, there's a mandatory five-year requirement for SR22 insurance coverage. If you fail to maintain adequate coverage during that time, the court can order that the clock be restarted. That means you'll go back to square one. Don't risk starting the SR22 insurance requirement all over again. Maintain adequate coverage until your time limit is up.

Lose Your License and Registration

If you're required to maintain SR22 insurance as part of a driving conviction, pay attention to the time limits. You can't afford to let your SR22 insurance lapse. You might not realize this, but your driving privileges and vehicle registration are both connected to the SR22 insurance. If your coverage lapses, you run the risk that your license and registration will be suspended. If that happens, you won't be allowed to drive. You may need to wait several years before your driving privileges can be reinstated. Protect your right to drive. Maintain your SC22 coverage for the required time limit.

Pay Additional Penalties and Fines

If you were convicted of driving violations, you probably paid some fines and penalties. If you abide by the sentencing requirements, you shouldn't need to pay anything else. If one of those sentencing requirements was to maintain SR22 insurance, don't let it lapse. If you do, you could be ordered to pay additional penalties and fines. Unfortunately, the additional penalties and fines could end up being more expensive than the original ones. Avoid the added costs. Keep your SR22 insurance in good standing.

Spend More Time in Court

If you don't want to spend any more time in court, maintain your SR22 coverage. If you don't, you could be ordered back to court. Unfortunately, court dates can interfere with your family activities. They can even cause you to lose work hours, which can end up costing you even more money. Reduce the time you need to spend in court. Make sure your SR22 insurance doesn't lapse.
